The festive season often brings a sense of dread for those of us struggling with social anxiety during the holidays. While others look forward to family dinners and office parties, the expectation to be "of good cheer" can feel like a heavy burden.

Why Social Anxiety During the Holidays Intensifies

Social anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions, and it tends to peak when social expectations are at their highest. You might find yourself worrying about an event for weeks, or mentally scrutinizing every conversation after you leave. While canceling might feel good in the moment, it can lead to isolation.

Creating a Calming Plan for Holiday Events

The best way to manage social anxiety during the holidays is to have a structured plan:

  • Pre-party prep: Practice grounding exercises like the 4-7-8 breathing method before you walk in the door.

  • Use the Buddy System: Attend events with a friend who understands your recovery journey.

  • Volunteer: If you’re overwhelmed, offer to help the host. Keeping your hands busy with non-social tasks is a great way to ease social anxiety during the holidays.

  • Exit Strategy: Remember, you don't have to stay until the end. Give yourself permission to leave when you've reached your limit.

Ready to find your peace? You don’t have to navigate these triggers alone. The Recovery Coach NY program, developed by Founder & President Cindy Feinberg, is based on the philosophical theory of holism: The system as a whole determines how the parts behave. Working together, we create a plan to provide the safety, structure and accountability that promotes long-term wellness..
